Functional Neurosurgery

This discipline of neurosurgery entails Epilepsy and movement disorders, including spasticity and dystonia. Dr. Johnson works very closely with her multidisciplinary Epilepsy team to not only determine if a patient is a surgical candidate but to also determine what surgical approach should be used. Treatment of epilepsy can entail medical management, vagal nerve stimulator and/or brain surgery where the seizure focus is removed or the cerebral hemispheres are disconnected. Dr. Johnson also uses a multidisciplinary approach in treating movement disorders. Surgery for spasticity involves placement of a baclofen pump or performing a dorsal rhizotomy both of which Dr. Johnson has had successful outcomes. Treatment for Dystonia also includes placement of a baclofen pump and in very select cases deep brain stimulation.
